'Time is always important:' Cambria Co. receives funding to create new DNA database
Cambria Co., PA (WJAC) — New crime-solving equipment will soon be coming to Cambria County and investigators are hoping that it will help them solve cases much faster.
The county recently receiving more than a half-a-million-dollar federal grant for a DNA database.
Officials saying the database will vastly speed up the process of getting DNA matches.
In a burglary, for instance, if a window is broken and investigators find blood on the glass, what currently takes months to get a match could now take just 24-48 hours.
Officials say this will speed up the process of getting search warrants and eventually making an arrest.
“Time is almost always important, not only in homicides but even in crimes like burglaries and other types of property crimes,” said DA Greg Neugebauer.
The grant was approved with the help of Congressman John Joyce.
Authorities say they're looking to establish a southwestern regional database with rapid DNA machines that will help neighboring counties.
