Pirates release longtime minor leaguer Drew Maggi
Pittsburgh (WJAC) — The fairy tale has come to an end, at least for now.
According to multiple reports, the Pittsburgh Pirates organization has reportedly released infielder Drew Maggi.
Maggi's "inspirational" story began in the spring when he made his MLB debut on April 26th after spending 13 years in the minor leagues.
The following day, Maggi made his first career big-league start against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Then, a few days later, in a rain-out/make-up doubleheader, Maggi recorded his first career MLB hit and RBI against the Washington Nationals.
Maggi was then sent back to the Altoona Curve, the Double-A affiliate of the Pirates, where he has since struggled to perform.
In 36 games played this season with Altoona, Maggi has 23 hits, 10 RBIs and a batting average of .181.
"Thank you, Pirates fans. You’re the best in the world. And thank you to the Pirates organization. I’m not done yet!" Maggi reportedly told reporters on Monday.
