PIAA to change how they determine school athletic classifications
The Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association made some changes this week to how they will determine athletic classifications.
1-A through 6-A classifications are counted by a school's enrollment or number of students.
Until now, when making classifications, the PIAA only counted 10% of students that lived in the school district but did not physically go to that school for athletic enrollment.
Now, they will factor in all cyber, charter, home schooled, and vo-tech students towards that number when making the classifications.
“We have eliminated the ten percent because it was leading itself down towards a lot of confusion. They didn’t know which kids to count, which kids to not count. We felt the cleanest thing to do was just one for one. Put every single student in whether they go to a vo-tech, any student that would otherwise be eligible at your school, you’ll include in your numbers,” said PIAA associate executive director Melissa Mertz.
The PIAA classifies athletic conferences every two years and they are due for a reclassification next year, which is when this change will go into effect.
