New Meadows custard shop opening on Scalp Ave

Publish date: 2024-04-15

A sweet treat is coming to the Geistown area of Johnstown.

On Monday morning, The Meadows on Scalp Avenue in Johnstown will open its doors to the public.

But before then, friends and family celebrated the hard work it took to get here.

"Today is to celebrate everyone in the process, family, friends, contractors, that helped us out through this process and make it happen in Johnstown. And it's a great opportunity to get people together and finally know that we're open,” said co-owner Heath Beckner.

Beckner and his parents are also the owners of Em's subs , one of which is located in the same building as their new business.

They believe the building can become a "one-stop shop" for subs and dessert.

"It's going to explode. We are hoping people come in for lunch or dinner. Spring we are going to put a deck out front so that people can go outside and enjoy their lunch or dinner and then come over for their dessert. And then even vice versa, if they are here in the evening, get their dessert, they can pick up their lunch for tomorrow and get a sub for the next day,” said co-owner Melanie Beckner.

The Meadows is famous for frozen custard and Italian ice.

So, what makes the 70-year-old franchise so special?

"The Meadows is all about family, history and the community. And it's different than an ice cream shop. It's a custard, and people love the custard. We've got a bunch of flavors, and not only the custard, we have the Italian ice, the arctic swirls. I can't express it enough that the community is very excited that we are going to be opening up here tomorrow,” said Heath Beckner.

The doors will open at The Meadows on Monday at 11 a.m.

The first 70 people who walk through the door will receive a free small cone each week for a whole year.

The reason 70 was picked is because 2020 is the 70th anniversary of The Meadows.
