4th Update|

According to Cambria County EMA director Art Martynuska, the eastbound lanes of Rt. 22 are open as of Tuesday evening, and the westbound lanes are scheduled to reopen at 11pm Tuesday night.

3rd Update |

Officials with the Cambria County SHARP Hazmat team have confirmed the types of chemicals that were being hauled by the tractor-trailer that overturned on Route 22 in Jackson Township Monday.

Officials say the truck was hauling approximately 40,000 pounds of chemicals, some solid and some liquid, and stated that there were eight chemicals in total.

Authorities noted that most of the chemicals, which included organic peroxide, perchloric acid, ethanol and sodium dichromate, are used in various cleaning agents and can be harmful if mixed together.

Officials say approximately 26,000 pounds of the organic peroxide were on board, and reportedly mixed with the perchloric acid after leaking out of the back of the truck.

Investigators say the chemical reaction created a smoke-like substance and intense heat.

Officials say a containment pond was built to help clean up the spill.

Authorities say crews should complete the clean up process by Tuesday night or Wednesday morning.

2nd UPDATE |

Cambria County officials say Route 22 in Jackson Township will be shut down "indefinitely" as crews continue their clean up efforts from Monday's hazmat crash.

Jackson Township Fire Chief Scott Emerson says the spill has reportedly been contained and the cleaning crew is the only unit that is still on scene.

Officials say, as of approximately 2:30 a.m., no chemicals were reported in the nearby creek.

Authorities say the evacuation notice affected approximately seven homes and the order has been reduced to approximately 500 yards of the incident.

Officials have not yet confirmed what the truck was specifically hauling, however, it is believed to hauling chlorine.
