Folks can make wallaby carry bags and joey pouches.

Library staff members are animal lovers themselves, and they felt the need to help the animals affected by the fires in Australia. They say every little bit helps. If they make 10 or 15 pouches, that can help. They say Cameron County has many people with arts and crafts talent, and they hope folks will come out and help.

The level of destruction caused by the wildfires in Australia is upsetting to them, and they say wildlife that doesn't exist anywhere else, such as the kangaroos and wallabies, need our help to save their habitat and have a second chance at life.

The finished items will be sent to Lewisburg, and then will be shipped to Australia in the coming days.

The library will be open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, but folks can stay after 1 p.m.

"You also don't have to be an expert crafter, or master sewer,” said Yelena Kisler. “These patterns are very simple and straightforward. Even if you don't know how to sew, and if you just want to come down and help us cut fabric and patterns, that's great, too. An extra set of hands never hurts."

The event begins in the library's back room, located on 27 West Fourth Street.
