Johnstown YMCA receives enough support from community to stay open
CAMBRIA COUNTY, Pa. (WJAC) — In September WJAC reported the Greater Johnstown YMCA faced permanent closure due to a lack of membership and funding as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. Four months later things are looking up for the Y as members have started to come back and the community has stepped up to support the staple that's been a part of the city for 150 years.
The Greater Johnstown YMCA has had to close twice throughout the pandemic under state coronavirus mitigation efforts. Monday, the Y opened up after a second closure throughout the holiday season and members were eager to return.
“I've been involved with the Y for a long long time and its helped me through many bad times and I know the Y is like my second family and I can't say enough about the Y,” said Greater Johnstown YMCA member and instructor Dee Kmecak.
Sean Seabring, CEO of the Greater Johnstown YMCA, says membership have been steady and they’ve even started to accept new members. Seabring says memberships are a big part of what helps fund the Y to stay open.
Since our story aired in September, Seabring says community members have also made generous donations and the 1889 Foundation will support several programs in 2021.
“We're really excited for the opportunity of the future. Spent the last couple of months really focusing on our mission, which is to put Christian principals into practice through programs that build a healthy spirit, mind and body for all,” said Seabring.
The Y will close at 2:30-3:00pm every weekday so the facility can be sanitized, current hours are as follows: Monday-Thursday 6:00am-2:30pm 3:00pm-9:00pm, Friday 6:00am-2:30pm 3:00pm-6:00pm, Saturday 7:00am-12:00pm and Sunday 10:00am-4:00pm.
