family and friends reflect on his legacy

Former congressman Bud Shuster passed away last Wednesday at the age of 91.

He served Pennsylvania’s 9th Congressional District for 28 years from 1973 to 2001. He is well known for advocating several transportation projects, including I-99.

Today, family and friends gathered for a memorial service at First Christian Church in Everett to mourn the loss of Bud Shuster and remember and honor his legacy.

Son of Bud Shuster, and former congressman, Bill Shuster said, “I watched my father do good for so many people. Small communities, large communities, single people, married people. Just, he really put his heart and soul into it.”

Attendee of the memorial service Jennifer Mearkle said, “I will remember bud as a true friend. He loved his family more than life. His farm was everything to him, and the door was always open, and you were always welcome.”

People at the memorial described Bud as firm but fair with the ability to be friends with anyone.

“He was a real team player,” Bill Shuster said. “He would say to us always when I have accomplishments it's not just me. It's the team that surrounds me. They share in those successes.”

Bill Shuster said Bud's passion carried into every part of his life.

“My dad was special because he had a tremendous intellect, a tremendous drive, and a tremendous dedication to what he was doing,” Bill Shuster said. “Whether it was representing the people, whether it was digging a ditch on the farm he was committed to doing the job.”

Those close to Bud Shuster said as much as anything else, he should be remembered as a family man.

“His family was his priority and for generations to come we will see that in Bud Shuster,” Mearkle said.

“At the Everett Theatre, they got on the billboard ‘Bud Shuster 32-23’ and ‘a life well lived,’ Bill Shuster said. That says it all. He lived a life well.”
